It led to the P30 Glider Gun that proved a pattern can add counters to the field endlessly. Conway originally thought that Life's patterns remained finite, but,once the Glider Gun was found by Gosper, all sorts of guns, spaceships, puffers,breeders and even the terrific SPACE-FILLER showed up.
